- Analysis of staff needs and provision of staff training through in-class support, workshops, CPD (as staff meetings or on an INSET day) to raise awareness of specific literacy issues within a school and identify ways forward.
- Analysis of children’s writing through book scrutiny, with written advice on ways forward for a Key Stage, year group or class, and provision of targets where appropriate;
- Advice on and demonstration of how to use the Play-talk-think-write® boxes, aimed at 4-11-year-olds, in order to develop children’s understanding and development of story planning, telling and writing
- Guidance on how to motivate reluctant writers with emphasis upon boys’ writing
- Use of Mantle of the Expert approaches to learning (see MoE download);
- Development of reading comprehension and ways of helping children understand what kinds of questions different questions require of them;
- Practical advice on the teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling;
- Provision of or advice on customised planning for specified year groups or classes, based on analysis of needs and including structured play or drama, and skills sessions where appropriate.
